What Is The Snap Program

According to the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, SNAP provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of needy families so they can purchase healthy food and move towards self-sufficiency. Its the modern-day version of the food stamp program, which was first enacted in 1939, but ended in the spring of 943, since the conditions that brought the program into being unmarketable food surpluses and widespread unemployment no longer existed, according to the USDA.

The Food Stamp Act of 1964 helped needy individuals and families across the country receive nutritious food. Throughout the decades, the program would undergo periods of expansion and different legislative changes. How many individuals benefit from SNAP can vary by state. For example, in Alabama, the SNAP program reached 804,000 state residents, or 1 in 6 individuals, in 2017, according to data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities . In Nevada, SNAP reached 441,000 state residents, or 1 in 7 individuals, in 2017.

According to the CBPP, the average SNAP recipient received $127 in benefits per month in 2018. As for how much SNAP costs taxpayers, the federal government spent $68 billion on SNAP and similar programs in 2018. Anticipated spending for maintaining the SNAP program, in relation to the overall gross domestic product, is expected to fall throughout the coming decade, the CBPP notes.

Nevada Experiences Surge In First

LAS VEGAS The coronavirus pandemic has led to massive unemployment. The unemployment rate in Las Vegas for the month of June was 18% and many families are in need of help to put food on the table.

That need has led to an increase in the number of new applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP benefits. As a result, the agency that deals with the federal SNAP program has had to make some changes to keep up with the demand.

The number of first-time applications for food stamps is in the thousands. In January, before the COVID-19 crisis, the state says it received almost 15,000 new applications for SNAP benefits and 33% of those were first-time applicants. In April, during the pandemic, of the 20,000 new applicants that filed, 60% were first-time applicants.

Nearly 500,000 people in Nevada depend on SNAP benefits for food and the state is bracing for another surge in applications as more layoffs loom.

Our work requirements have been waived. So, typically, if you are receiving SNAP benefits and youre also an able-bodied adult without dependents, we do have some work requirements that go along with receiving benefits. However those work requirements have been waived, said Julie Balderson, spokesperson, Nevada Department of Health and Human Services.

Another change is that some retailers in Nevada including Walmart and Amazon can now accept SNAP benefits for online orders.

Not all food and drink items are covered by the program.
