Dont Expect Food Stamps If Youre Unemployed And Childless

WASHINGTON — As many as a million Americans will be kicked off food stamps this year thanks to the return of federal rules targeting unemployed adults without children.

That’s according to a new analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal Washington, D.C. think tank, which finds that no fewer than 500,000 people will lose benefits.

“The loss of this food assistance, which averages approximately $150 to $170 per person per month for this group, will cause serious hardship among many,” the Center on Budget says.

New Jersey, North Carolina, Georgia and 20 other states will allow able-bodied adults without dependents to receive food assistance for only three months unless they work at least 20 hours per week. Though states are carrying out the policy, it’s a requirement of federal law that had been waived for the past several years because of widespread joblessness.

With unemployment rates tumbling, the rule is returning. Several states brought it back ahead of schedule last year, and by the end of this year, only a handful of states will qualify for waivers from the rule.

“It’s inexplicable how anyone could call compliance with a federal policy a punitive action by the state,” a spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told The Associated Press last week in response to criticism that the policy punishes poor people.

The changes to SNAP listed below last as long as a public health state of emergency remains in place at the federal level. Please check back each month to see if benefits will continue.

Emergency Supplemental Food Assistance Benefits

As of April 2021, a change was made that requires the temporary emergency supplemental food assistance benefit a household receives to be at least $95 in additional benefits. For October, these additional emergency benefits will be available when your regular SNAP benefits are available. The maximum SNAP benefit only continues while a state of emergency is in place. Check back every month to see if the emergency allotment supplements will continue.

The States Offering Extra Food Stamps Worth At Least $95 Per Household This Month

  • 15:37 ET, Nov 2 2021

MANY states continue to extend food stamp support in wake of the ongoing Covid pandemic.

For the month of November, 24 states have acknowledged an extension of the benefits.

Last month, 45 states acknowledged the extension of benefits, according to the United States Department of Agriculture website.

The emergency support is available under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and has been since the onset of the Covid crisis.

States were allowed to hike the food stamp benefits to the maximum levels when a federal public emergency and state-level emergency or disaster declaration were declared, though that has since ended in a handful of states.

However, many states continue to offer the added assistance as the Delta variant has ravaged parts of the country.

Below are the confirmed states offering the maximum amount of cash for the month of November:

  • Alabama

It’s important to note that the amount of extra money you can receive depends on family size, but as of April 2021, the minimum households must receive each month is $95.

Bidens Increase In Food Stamp Funding Means $376m More For Nj Households

668,000 will lose food stamp benefits under new work rules

A sign in front of a New York store announces that it accepts SNAP

The more than 700,000 New Jersey households now receiving aid under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the program formerly known as food stamps, will see an increase in benefits beginning Oct. 1.

That will mean an extra $36.24 per person per month, according to the state Department of Human Services.

The increased benefits will improve the food security of many New Jersey children and families enrolled in NJ SNAP, Acting Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman said. Throughout the pandemic, we have worked hard to make sure families receive additional pandemic food benefits as quickly as possible and will continue to do so.

Under the Biden administration, federal benefits will rise to $1.76 billion from $1.38 billion, a $376 million increase.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 705,000 New Jersey residents, or 8% of the state population, receive SNAP benefits.

This is a great start but we have a ways to go, said Adele LaTourette, director of Hunger Free New Jersey. This is not going to end hunger in our nation.

The increase is separate from the temporary boost of $95 a month in SNAP benefits, which will last while the coronavirus pandemic emergency continues.

LaTourette said the pandemic highlighted the large number of New Jerseyans who dont have enough to eat.

Ssi Participation And State Food Stamp Program Management

There is indirect evidence that supports the hypothesis that the prevalence of FSP participation could be increased, at least in some states. Despite the technical issues raised above, there is general agreement that variation across states in estimated FSP participation does bear some relationship to state effectiveness in FSP promotion.6 If this is the case, it is interesting to see if interstate variation in food stamp receipt among households that include SSI recipients is related to variation in estimated aggregate state participation rates. If states with high aggregate participation rates also show exceptional participation by households that include SSI recipients, this would suggest that management makes a difference and that outreach procedures followed in high participation states should be studied and, if appropriate, imitated.

Note that if households with SSI recipients constituted a large fraction of all FSP eligible households, any connection between aggregate FSP take-up and prevalence among households with SSI recipients would be virtually tautological. However, the FNS estimate of the number of persons eligible for the FSP in an average month in 2004 is five times greater than the total number of SSI recipients , so it would be possible for variation in aggregate FSP take-up to occur independently of program participation among households that include SSI recipients.

The Amount Of Assistance For Food

USDA rule could affect 3.1M food stamp recipients

The amount of SNAP benefits a household receives is called the allotment. The Allotment is determined by multiplying the net monthly income of the family by .3 and subtracting that amount from the Maximum Monthly Allotment for the household size. For instance, a household of four with a net income of $1,151 would be entitled to a SNAP allotment of $345 each month. There is a maximum monthly allotment for each household size which is adjusted in October of each year. For the year October 2011 September 2012, the maximum monthly allotments are as follows:

Maximum Monthly Amounts On Food Stamps

There is a maximum monthly allotment based on the size of the household. When determining your benefit allotment, they will take your net monthly income and multiply it by 30%. That number will then be subtracted from the maximum monthly allotment. The remaining amount is the total monthly allotment you will receive based on your application. This amount may change if your income or household size changes.

SNAP benefits are a specific money amount provided to recipients each month to go towards nutritional foods. Recipients are provided with an electronic benefits transfer card, and money is added to the card each month. You can check your balance by phone, and any unused funds at the end of the month remain on the card to be used to following month. Once allocated, benefits will not expire.

Benefits can be used to buy food and drinks at most grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations, pharmacies that sell food, and farmers markets. Benefits cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco, medicine, hot food, food meant to be eaten in the store, or any non-food items.
