If You Are Enrolled In Medicaid Or Tanf

Food stamp sign-up issues traced to employees putting wrong info into the Ohio Benefits system

If you are enrolled in the TANF program or are receiving Medicaid, there are a few important things to remember:

  • Cooperation with the OAG is mandatory. Failure to cooperate with the child support process can lead to a reduction or elimination of your benefits.
  • In some situations, HHSC can grant a parent a good cause exemption from cooperation with the OAG. This is most often granted due to family violence. If you have safety concerns about the child support process, call 2-1-1 and ask to speak to someone about a good cause exemption and for additional information visit the Get Child Support Safely website.

To view your benefits and how they may be affected by child support obligation communicate directly with HHSC through the âYour Texas Benefitsâ website.

If you printed a paper food stamp application, you can submit it to an office in person rather than mailing it. It is also possible to complete the entire application in person. To do so, you will need to find an HHSC Community Partner, which is a local organization that provides HHSC services. Many organizations have signed up with the Community Partner Program to help petitioners at the local level.

Moreover, keep in mind that part of the SNAP benefits application process is to undergo an interview. If you apply in person, it may be possible to complete your interview on the same day that you submit your form. Learn more about the interview and application process by reading our free guide.

Once petitioners feel that they are prepared to submit a food stamps application, they must obtain the necessary forms. In most cases, claimants may apply for food stamps:

  • On their states web portals. States offer applicants the option to apply for food stamps online. With these venues, candidates are brought to a web page where they can digitally fill in all of their information and submit their applications without leaving the site.
  • Similar to the option above, claimants who wish to access their SNAP food stamps applications online can oftentimes find PDFs of these forms on their state websites. However, unlike the previous option, candidates who utilize this choice are then responsible for printing and filling out their applications by hand. Then, petitioners generally must fax, mail or hand deliver these claims to their SNAP departments.
  • SNAP offices keep applications in their offices, and workers distribute these forms to requestors. In this scenario, candidates are offered a paper form, which they may either file right there in the office or take home and return using the methods illustrated in the second option.

How Can Tanf And Medicaid Affect My Child Support

Federal law requires all parents who receive TANF or Medicaid benefits through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to cooperate with the Office of the Attorney Generals efforts to identify the childs noncustodial parent, establish paternity, settle child support orders, complete child support modifications and enforce child support.

TANF recipients assign their right to child support collections to the state. This means the family will receive the first $75 collected during any month that a current child support payment is made. The remainder of the child support payment made will be applied toward reimbursing the state and federal governments for the TANF benefits received by the family. When the family no longer receives TANF, all current support payments made will be sent to the custodial parent.

Parents who receive certain types of Medicaid assign their right to cash medical support collections to the state. This money will be redirected to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to reimburse the state and federal governments for the Medicaid benefits received by the family.

If the children receive Medicaid benefits, but the adult does not, the adult has the option to request child support services.

All children at a public or public charter school who would usually receive free or reduced-price lunch can now get P-EBT.

Children under the age of six in households that received SNAP at any time since October 1, 2020 are also eligible.

A Georgia Department of Human Services spokesperson said some students are automatically eligible for the benefit if they attend a Community Eligibility Provision school.

Students attending CEP schools are automatically eligible for P-EBT for the 2020-2021 school year, meaning they would have received the money without having to apply for it.

CEP schools generally provide free meals to all students regardless of their household income.

DHS’s Division of Family and Children Services has said it wrapped up its issuance schedule and childcare benefits have been released and processed across the state.

“Summer P-EBT is still on target to be distributed to all eligible student families during the month of January,” the announcement said.

Anyone expecting a card should wait until today, January 15, for it to arrive.

Under the guidelines, due to school closures, reduced attendance, or reduced hours caused by the pandemic, households that would usually qualify for free school lunches or reduced-priced meals are eligible to receive benefits on an EBT card to help them buy food.

Families who receive P-EBT benefits will not have to pay back the benefits.

Receiving Your Snap Benefits: Lone Star Card

When you qualify for SNAP, you will be receiving benefits through Lone Star Card. This is a standard plastic card, as in the case of debit cards. The card is used just like a debit card. You will have the money in your account on due date and you can purchase food items with it, using it like a debit card.

The United States Department of Agriculture provides SNAP benefits. USDA will load your card with your monthly amount of SNAP benefits, each month. You can use this money on stores where regular debit card works.

If you qualify and receive a Lone Star Card, it is your responsibility to use it with care. No one else can use your card since it is illegal to allow someone else to use your benefits. If you are in a situation where you’ll need someone else to use your card for you, you will have to ask for a second card. You can then give the second card to someone you trust. The money spent from that card will be deducted from your primary card.

In order to start using your Lone Star Card, you will have to sign at the back of your card after you receive it. You will also need to register it in order to use it. You can call 1 800 777 7328 to register your card. You will then choose a PIN for your card.

If you opt to pick up your card at HHSC benefits office instead of getting it in mail, you won’t have to register it. When you are handed over the card at the office, it is registered at spot.

More Americans Can Use Food Stamps For Restaurants Prepared Meals

A growing contingent of advocates and academics have warned that many Americans no longer have the time, skills, resources or physical ability to prepare the kinds of recipes lawmakers envisioned at the launch of SNAP.

This story was republished from Stateline, an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts. Read the original story here.

But that policy is shifting in Maryland and in states across the country. In the past two years, six states have opted in to a little-used federal program that allows older adults to use their food benefits on select, low-cost restaurant meals.

The Restaurant Meals Program, as its known, also covers people with disabilities and people experiencing homelessness. The program is most widely available in California and Arizona, with newer entrants such as Maryland and Illinois still ramping up their operations.

Nutrition experts and advocates say the programs sudden growth is part of a larger push to expand access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, during the pandemic, as well as an overdue reckoning around home-cooking and federal nutrition aid. American anti-hunger policy has long assumed that the best way to feed hungry people is to encourage them to cook for themselves.

We just sort of ignore the fact that there are populations that dont have the means to prepare or store food.
