Missouri Extends Maximum Food Stamp Benefits Through September
Patrick Ishmael said the government is doing the only thing it can do in extending maximum food stamp benefits for Missouri residents on a month-to-month basis as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
These are unusual times with everything caused by the pandemic and I think its important that we make sure people are able to get all the things that are necessary for them, said Ishmael, director of government accountability at the Show-Me Institute. I too think its important that we protect our most vulnerable in the middle of a crisis.
Not long after receiving approval from the United States Department of Agriculture and Nutrition Service , the Missouri Department of Social Services announced plans for the extension, paving the way for households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to automatically be entitled to the maximum based on size of household.
Currently nearly 373,000 Missouri households receive benefits, which are estimated to help feed more than double that many people. Since the pandemic hit earlier this year, the number of households on food stamps in Missouri has spiked by nearly 50%.
While Ishmael said he feels the government is now doing the responsible thing by offering more assistance, he said he worries about the economys long-term future and how things should best return to normalcy.

Missouri Food Stamps Requirements
Missouri food stamps requirements pertain to a few important aspects of a claimants circumstances. For example, in order to qualify for the program, candidates need to be Missouri residents. Even though these food assistance benefits are available throughout the country, petitioners may only apply in the states where they live. Additionally, the MO requirements for food stamps indicate that claimants must have household resources that fall below a certain threshold. Specifically, most families must possess assets that equal $2,250 or less. However, households with disabled individuals or members who are older than 60 years of age may have resource limits that total up to $3,500. Excluded from these asset totals include:
- Petitioners primary family homes.
- Life insurance policies.
- Prepaid burial plots.
Furthermore, food stamps eligibility requirements indicate that claimants need to have Social Security Numbers . However, candidates who do not yet have this information may still petition for SNAP if they agree to apply for these numbers. In any case, applicants need to remember that these requirements pertain to all of the people who live in their households and who would also utilize their SNAP benefits.
