Do I Qualify For Food Assistance Benefits

You may qualify for benefits if your householdâs gross monthly income is at or under 130 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. These guidelines change yearly you can find the current figures at aspe.hhs.gov/poverty-guidelines. Some households may qualify if they have incomes over the limit if someone in the household is elderly or disabled.

Learn About Disqualifications From Snap

There are several reasons why petitioners may be rejected from the SNAP program. One of the biggest reasons why applicants are denied is because their total monthly income does not fall within the required limits.

The program targets low-income communities and as such, has strict income requirements to ensure those who most need nutritional assistance will receive it. Full-time college students may also be ineligible for food stamps if their college or university offers food assistance programs.

The program may also reject an applicant with a history of food stamp fraud. The program requires beneficiaries to follow strict rules regarding who can receive benefits and how to use them. Beneficiaries who violate these rules and/or attempt to defraud the program may be flagged in the system. This will lead to a temporary or permanent ban from the program.

Furthermore, applicants with drug felonies on their records do not qualify for SNAP benefits in certain states, such as West Virginia and South Carolina. Indiana previously had a lifetime ban on SNAP benefits for drug felons but recently lifted the ban, which will take effect in 2020. Some states require drug felons to complete drug tests and pass certain programs to qualify.

How Can I Know If I Might Be Eligible For Snap

To find out if you may be eligible for SNAP Benefits, visit myBenefits.ny.gov and click on Am I Eligible? to use the SNAP pre-screening eligibility tool. Please note: The pre-screening tool is not an application for SNAP. The tool will look at the information you provided to see if you might be able to get help with buying food and other services. You’ll have to apply for the programs listed to get a final decision about benefits, and information will be provided to let you know how to do that. Keep in mind that you always have the right to apply for these benefits.

In New York State, the SNAP Program now allows you to have more money in a checking or savings account, or even a retirement account, without affecting your eligibility for SNAP benefits. As of January 1, 2008, most households applying for SNAP benefits no longer have to pass a savings/resource test in order to get SNAP benefits. This means having money in a savings, checking or retirement account, or having other resources, will not keep you from being eligible for SNAP benefits, as long as you meet the income guidelines.

Preparing For The Michigan Food Stamps Interview

Participating in a Michigan food stamps interview is a necessary step in the enrollment process. These conversations take place after claimants submit their materials for the program, and the interviews are conducted by MDHHS specialists. Candidates who apply in person may be able to participate in these interviews the same day they submit their materials. However, this depends on how busy that particular office is on the day of submission.

Petitioners frequently wonder, What do you need for the food stamps interview? Generally, the SNAP case workers use this time as an opportunity to verify whatever figures and information claimants reported throughout their applications. As a result, petitioners should expect that the questions asked during the food stamps interview will relate to whatever information they gave the MDHHS. Therefore, applicants may be required to bring documentation that relates to any of the following topics:

  • Identity and Social Security Number
  • Address and household relationships
