Using Food Stamps For Online Grocery Shopping Is Getting Easier
Walmart is expanding a program that allows for online orders of groceries to be picked up and paid for with food stamps at more than 2,500 locations.
It’s the latest move by a major retailer to give low-income shoppers more options for using food stamps in the modern era of online shopping. Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers, began piloting the use of food stamps for online grocery pickup service in 2017 in a few locations.
Separately, Walmart, Amazon and ShopRite are offering shoppers in the New York area the option of making online purchases with food stamps and having them delivered.
In this case, shoppers who live in areas that qualify don’t have to physically drive to the store to pick up the items they purchased. However, they do have to pay the delivery fees out of their own pocket.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture launched this program in April as a two-year pilot project for those on food stamps, the program also known as SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Everyone on food stamps has a bank card called an EBT card, backed by the government. The program allows for customers to pay with their card online, just like a debit or credit card.
Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman said the company’s goal is to be able to give families the option to use food stamps to make online purchases in their homes, no matter where they live.

Where You Can Order Groceries Online With An Ebt Card
As more Americans have sought food assistance amid the pandemic, more states and stores have started letting consumers use their benefits when ordering groceries online for pickup or delivery.
Participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, can pay in store at most major grocery chains including specialty grocery stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joes using electronic benefits transfer cards. But, until last year, EBT wasnt a widely available payment option online. Now, through the expedited expansion of an online purchasing pilot program run by the U.S. Department of Agricultures Food and Nutrition Service, households receiving SNAP benefits in 47 states and the District of Columbia can use EBT to pay for grocery pickup and/or delivery from select retailers .
The list of participating states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Alaska, Louisiana, and Montana are the only states that have not enrolled in the pilot.

In addition, many religious organizations have food assistance programs. Often these organizations allow you to complete an application onlineor just show up on a designated dayand they will bring the groceries out to your vehicle. Some will even deliver groceries if you dont have transportation.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO Today, the Department of Social Services announced Missouri Food Stamp/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program households are now able to use an Electronic Benefit Transfer card to purchase eligible foods online. Currently, the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service has approved two retailers, and Walmart for online purchasing DSS will update information if other grocery retailers are added. Online purchasing is a permanent option for Food Stamp/SNAP participants. To get started with online purchasing, Food Stamp/SNAP participants just need to connect directly with the online retailer. It is important to note Food Stamp/SNAP benefits cannot cover any delivery fee or other associated charges. As of April 30, 2020, 752,315 Missourians or 360,937 households receive Food Stamp/SNAP benefits a new record for a one-month increase in Missouris Food Stamp/SNAP caseload, In March, 660,628 individuals, or 311,401 households participated in the program.

Currently, Walmart only offers online grocery purchases with EBT for curbside pick-up and not for delivery. Delivery options will be added soon.
If you have a CalFresh EBT Card, you will now be able to use your cards to buy groceries and select curbside pick-up.
You can only use your EBT card to buy eligible grocery items and you cannot use your food stamps dollars to pay for delivery.
Step 1 Go to the Walmart Grocery website
The first step to purchasing groceries online at Walmart is to go to the Walmart Grocery website at www.grocery.walmart.com.
Step 2 Find Walmart Store Near You
Next, enter your zip code to find the Walmart store location near you. This is the location you will pick-up your online grocery order from.
Step 3 Shop for Groceries Online
Once you have selected your Walmart location, begin shopping for grocery items online by adding EBT eligible items to your shopping cart.
You will be asked to sign in to your Walmart Account or Create an Account once you place an item in your shopping cart.
Step 4 Checkout and Choose Delivery Option
Once you sign into Walmart, you can continue shopping until you have selected all the grocery items you want.
Next, click the Check out button. There is a $30 minimum for Walmart online grocery shopping. You will not be able to proceed to checkout until you reach this limit.
Once you hit the check out button, you will be taken to a page where you can Reserve a time for pickup.

Pay With Cash: How It Works
- Customers go to Walmart.com from any Internet-connected device to select an item and place an order.
- During checkout, the customer selects the cash option and their shipping preference. Customer immediately receives an order number on the order confirmation page and an email receipt with their order number. The item is reserved in the system.
- The customer has 48-hours to take the printed order form to any cash register of any Walmart store or Neighborhood Market.
- Once cash payment is completed in the store and received, shipping then occurs via Site to Store or to their preferred address.
