Nearly every U.S. household buying groceries through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can now do so through Amazon, the Seattle-based retailer announced April 28.
Through Amazons participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot, residents in 48 states Montana and Louisiana were recently added to the programand District of Columbia can buy groceries online for delivery using their EBT cards via Amazon Grocery or Amazon Fresh . Amazon waived the Prime membership requirement for SNAP customers to access Amazon Fresh, further reducing barriers to online grocery shopping, it said.
With this addition, more than 99% of SNAP households have the ability to use their benefits online, Amazon said in a release.

During the pandemic, Amazon worked closely with the USDA to expand access to online grocery shopping to Americans who rely on SNAP benefits. The program launched in 2019 as a pilot in 10 states but has fast-tracked to a nearly national program to meet the evolving needs of customers. SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, is a federal program that provides food-purchasing assistance to low-income households. Although it is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the program is administered at the state level. Recipients now have their benefits loaded onto Electronic Benefits Transfer cards and no longer pay with food stamps.
The USDA announced the new COLA in an Aug. 9 memo posted on its website. As previously reported by GOBankingRates, heres how the monthly SNAP benefit will change for recipients in the 48 contiguous states and District of Columbia:
- The maximum monthly food allotment for individual SNAP recipients will increase to $281 from $250 previously.
- For couples, the maximum monthly allotment will increase to $516 from $459.
- For four-person households, the maximum monthly allotment will increase to $939 from $835.
- The minimum monthly allotment will increase to $23 from $20.
SNAP recipients can use their EBT cards to purchase the following food items:

Will Amazon Accept Food Stamps Next
Walmarts biggest rival Amazon is also interested in getting a piece of the food stamp pie. The Everything Store was on a list of companies that signed for the United States Department of Agriculture test of SNAP payment for online grocery orders, CNBC reported.
There is no evidence that Amazon is participating in SNAP but it just purchased Whole Foods Market, which operates around 400 standalone grocery stores in the USA. Since Amazon is cutting prices at Whole Paycheck, adding SNAP benefits would be a logical progression. New stories indicate that Amazon plans to add pickup and returns for online merchandise at some of its stores.
Amazon is also accepting returns via Kohls a department store that targets working-class customers, CNBC reported. Since food stamps are now a regular feature of working-class life in the United States Amazon will need to tap them to attract such customers.
This will be a major threat to dollar store operators Dollar Tree and Dollar General which depend heavily on working-class customers. Also in Amazons crosshairs is the fast-growing discount grocery chain Aldi which is now a fixture in many lower-income neighborhoods in the Rust Belt.
The first state to actually launch an online EBT program was New York, starting in 2019.
Since New York launched its program, more states have followed.
As of April 2020, all states but Maryland and New Jersey have implemented their online EBT programs.

On April 14th, 2020, The Florida Department of Children and Families , the department in charge of the food stamps program announced it will begin a pilot program for SNAP recipients to purchase groceries online with the use of an EBT card.

A Brief History Of The Food Stamp Benefits Program
The first iteration of the food stamp program began in 1939 and passed through a lot of studies, reports, and legislative proposals before President Kennedy initiated a pilot program in 1961. His aim, which fulfilled a campaign promise, was to expand food distribution to families in need. Finally, in 1964, the Food Stamp Act was passed into legislation by President Johnson and the food stamp program became permanent.
Among other official purposes, the food stamp benefits program was designed to strengthen the agricultural economy and provide improved levels of nutrition among low-income families. More practically, it was said to bring the food stamp pilot program under Congressional control and to enact the regulations into law. Eventually in 2008, after a lot of tinkering, the program was renamed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP benefits for short.
