How To Submit A Texas Food Stamp Application By Mail
If you do not want to apply for food stamps online in Texas, you can still use the states application portal to print a paper copy of the form. A paper food stamp application contains the same information as the online version. Because this form is used to apply for a variety of different benefits, simply follow the instructions for SNAP. If you wish, you can sign up for food stamps in addition to any other benefits you may qualify for.
Once your application is complete, make sure you sign it in the appropriate places. Then, you may send the completed form by fax or via mail.
What Happens After You Apply For Snap
If you applied for SNAP online, in person, by mail or by fax, you will receive a notice in the mail from the Health and Human Services Commission with your determination and benefit amount. If you are approved, you will then receive your EBT card, or Lone Star Card as it is known in Texas, in the mail within 14 days of your determination letter.
Once you receive your EBT card, you can use it to purchase items that are approved by SNAP at groceries and retail stores that accept EBT transactions. Learn about what you can purchase with SNAP here.
SNAP benefits are replenished each month that you are a member of the program. To check the balance of your EBT card, call the number on the back of your card or 1 777-7328. If you have a speech or hearing impairment call 711 for relay services.
Products You Cannot Buy Using Food Stamps In Texas
Understanding what you cannot spend food stamps on is just as important as learning what you can buy. There is some confusion about where SNAP benefits can be used and where they cannot.
To avoid any issues, it helps to know that benefits can never be used at casinos or on cruise ships. Even if you were able to find an approved food item in one of these places, you would not be able to buy it with your EBT card.
Moreover, most restaurants do not work with the Texas food stamps program either. There are very few restaurants that accept benefits. Generally, restaurants that take food stamps as payment only serve seniors, homeless or people with disabilities who cannot cook at home.
SNAP benefits can be used at a wide range of grocery stores and superstores. However, you cannot buy just any item at a participating store. Prohibited items include:
- Non-food items like pet food, paper products or cookware
- Alcohol, cigarettes or tobacco products
- Hot foods, such as a rotisserie chicken
- Prepared food items meant for immediate consumption, like a meal from the deli
While certain benefits can be withdrawn from an ATM as cash, it is important to note that SNAP benefits can never be taken out as cash. Therefore, you are also not allowed to receive cash back with a purchase made with your EBT card.

How Much Assistance Does Snap Provide
SNAP provides monthly benefits, known as an allotment, to eligible households. The allotment amount you can receive is based on 1) the number of people in your household and 2) your household income.
To calculate your allotment amount, multiply your households net income by 0.3 and then subtract that number from the federal maximum monthly benefit amount in the table below.
|Household Number||Federal Maximum Allotment Per Month|
|Each additional household member||+146|
You have one year to use your allotment or the benefits on your EBT card will be canceled.

The Republican bill stressed targeting benefits to the neediest, simplifying administration, and tightening controls on the program the Democratic bill focused on increasing access to those most in need and simplifying and streamlining a complicated and cumbersome process that delayed benefit delivery as well as reducing errors, and curbing abuse. The chief force for the Democratic Administration was Robert Greenstein, Administrator of the Food and Nutrition Service .
In Congress, major players were Senators George McGovern, Jacob Javits, Hubert Humphrey, and Bob Dole, and Congressmen Foley and Richmond. Amid all the themes, the one that became the rallying cry for FSP reform was “EPR”eliminate the purchase requirementbecause of the barrier to participation the purchase requirement represented. Currently 33 States exclude the value of all vehicles entirely. 15 States totally exclude the value of at least one vehicle per household. The 2 remaining states exempt an amount higher than the SNAPs standard auto exemption from the fair market value to determine the countable resource value of a vehicle.
