A MDHHS specialist will contact you and set up a conference to go over your FAP application. Bring your important documents to this conference. Can I Get Emergency Fap Benefits

Certain households are eligible for expedited or emergency FAP benefits. You are probably eligible for expedited FAP benefits if any of these are true:

• Your gross monthly income is $150 or less and you have less than $100 in cash or savings

• Your gross monthly income plus all of your cash and savings are less than your monthly housing and utility bills

• You are a migrant or seasonal worker who is between jobs and you have less than $100 in cash or savings

• You are homeless

If your application alone shows that you are eligible for expedited FAP benefits, MDHHS must review and make a decision on your application within seven days. This is true even if you dont have all the papers and proof of income that MDHHS asks for. You will have to give MDHHS all of this information in order to continue getting FAP.

A new state service is working to reach Michigan families who are unknowingly eligible for food assistance or could otherwise be struggling to apply.

In a Monday, Dec. 6 press release, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced the launch of MI Benefits Center. The service is meant to assist Michiganders in applying for much-needed food assistance, connect families to benefits and lower the cost for Michigan families.

My top priority every day is to make life easier for Michigan families by delivering change that makes a difference in their lives, and the MI Benefits Center is the latest innovation to help us lower food costs for Michigan families, Whitmer said.

By delivering additional relief to Michigan families on their grocery bills, we can ease financial burdens for Michiganders, drive down costs, and put more money in peoples pockets, putting Michigan first.

The MI Benefits Center will have a team of trained benefits specialists provide phone-based application assistance to remove barriers that prevent some Michigan residents from accessing food support.

Additional funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and philanthropic organizations will allow the MI Benefits Center to invest up to $1.2 million to support Michigan residents in the next year.

Temporary Benefits Increase From April 2009 To November 2013

SNAP benefits temporarily increased with the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 , a federal stimulus package to help Americans affected by the Great Recession of 2007. Beginning in April 2009 and continuing through the expansion’s expiration on November 1, 2013, the ARRA appropriated $45.2 billion to increase monthly benefit levels to an average of $133. This amounted to a 13.6 percent funding increase for SNAP recipients.

This temporary expansion expired on November 1, 2013, resulting in a relative benefit decrease for SNAP households on average, benefits decreased by 5 percent. If You Are A College Student

Some college students are eligible for FAP. In order to be eligible, you must be in student status and meet certain criteria. You are in student status if you are between 18 and 49 years old and enrolled in a post-secondary education program at least half-time.

If you are in student status, in order to be eligible, you must also meet one of the following criteria:

• Receive cash assistance

• Be enrolled in higher education program as a result of a special state-sponsored program

• Be physically or mentally unfit for employment

• Be employed, work at least 20 hours per week, and be paid for your work

• Be self-employed, work at least 20 hours per week, and make the equivalent to federal minimum wage for your work

• Participate in an on-the-job training program

• Participate in a federally funded work-study program during the regular school year

• Provide more than half of the physical care of a FAP household member younger than six

The idea for the first food stamp program has been credited to various people, most notably Secretary of AgricultureHenry A. Wallace and the program’s first administrator, Milo Perkins. Of the program, Perkins said, “We got a picture of a gorge, with farm surpluses on one cliff and under-nourished city folks with outstretched hands on the other. We set out to find a practical way to build a bridge across that chasm.” The program, run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture by permitting people on relief to buy orange stamps equal to their normal food expenditures for every $1 of orange stamps purchased, 50 cents’ worth of blue stamps were received. Orange food stamps could be used at any food retailers or wholesalers, but excluded achoholic beverages, concession stand meals that could be eaten on premises, and tobacco products. The blue stamps could only be used to buy what the USDA defined as surplus produce- which included items such as beans, eggs, fruit, and the like.
