    Beaumont Restaurant Owner Sentenced To 27 Years After Guilty Verdict In Food Stamp Fraud Case

    A Beaumont restaurant owner at the center of a 2019 food stamp fraud investigation has been found guilty by a Jefferson County jury. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison for illegal possession/transfer of EBT benefits.

    Johnny Ray Coleman, owner of Coleman’s Burger Deli in Beaumont’s South End, was accused of food stamp fraud in 2019 along with more than 60 others.

    On Tuesday, May 25, 2021, bond for Coleman was revoked as a result of the guilty verdict and the judge placed him in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office during a recess before sentencing.

    This isnt the first time Colemans bond has been revoked. His bond was revoked on May 3, 2021 for not showing up in court. It was reinstated after he appeared, and they accepted his reason for not being there that day. Judge Raquel West has revoked his bond again due to Tuesdays guilty verdict.

    According to a 12News file story, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office referred to the investigation as “a scheme involving the fraudulent use of benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits,” where $71,000 worth of food was sold at a Beaumont restaurant.

    After a search warrant was used at Coleman’s Burger Deli located at 4192 Highland in Beaumont, investigators found evidence that showed a connection between the restaurant and its use of EBT funds.

    Beaumont man gets 27 years after guilty verdict in food stamp fraud investigation

    The Jefferson County District Attorneys office released the names of 13 people arrested for food stamp fraud. The names are as follows.

    The DAs office indicted Johnny Ray Coleman and 61 other individuals for buying food stamps, District Attorney Bob Wortham said Wednesday.

    Worthams office alleges Coleman bought food stamps for 50 cents on the dollar and used the benefit to buy food for his restaurant, Colemans Burger Deli, located at 4192 Highland in Beaumont.

    Wortham said investigators found evidence Coleman made more than 300 purchases on 92 Electronic Benefits Transfer cards from 61 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance recipients and procured $71,000 worth of goods related to his business over a two-year span.

    Wortham said the evidence includes the locations of where Coleman made the purchases with the cards along with video of him taking the purchased items out of the store and to his restaurant.

    If you sell your food stamps, you are going to lose the opportunity to have them in the future, Wortham said.

    The district attorney said this was the first case involving food stamp abuse brought to his office. He said he looks forward to prosecuting more cases.

    I hate it when people steal from the taxpayers, he said. was using taxpayer money to buy the food in his restaurant.

    Wortham said he wants to prosecute these cases to the hilt.
