Assets in your family must be below certain limits. A household without a member who has a disability or is elderly must have assets of $ 2,250 or less. The assets of a household with an elderly or disabled person must be less than $3,500.

In general, assets include assets that might be available to buy food at home, such as money in a bank account.
Household assets, personal assets, and retirement savings are not included in this calculation. Automobiles are also excluded. Individual states have the option of relaxing asset limits. What Is Snap Or Food Stamp
Food stamps are part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program . The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program allows low-income families to purchase nutritious foods. You will receive your monthly allowance through your Electronic Benefit Transfer card if you are approved for benefits.

The bill faces an uncertain future in the Iowa House. Last year, the chairwoman of the House Human Resources Committee refused to take up a Medicaid work requirements bill after it passed the Senate on a 32-17 party-line vote.

Food Pantries Increase Stock
With the increased food assistance ending, Rome said the North Liberty Community Pantry expects to see a 20 percent increase in demand for services this month equal to the drop in demand officials saw in spring 2020. In total, officials at the North Liberty food pantry expect to serve about 800 families this year.
The CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank in Iowa City also expects to see a return to pre-pandemic levels in demand, which is about 5,200 families served per year, said Julia Winter, director of development.
We were able to meet peoples needs the last two years because they were not relying on supplemental food pantries for their grocery needs, Winter said. Now with state retracting that support, it becomes a community issue again.
Providing the maximum benefit allowed many families to catch up on bills or even get ahead financially, a major boost for families when the unemployment rate in Iowa was reaching record highs at the start of the pandemic.
Some families may be in a better place because of that and may not return, but many families are still working in minimum-wage jobs, Rome said. But with the cost of milk and eggs and tuna and other things has gone up so much, losing benefits is going to have a negative impact.
This also comes as the end of the school year approaches, and families will no longer have the benefit of their childrens schools providing breakfast and lunch during the summertime, Rome said.

How To Apply For Food Assistance Benefits In Iowa
To apply for Iowa Food Assistance benefits, contact your local DHS office, print the DHS Financial Support Application, or use the online service at their website.
You can also call toll free 1-877-DHS-5678 to find out where your local Iowa Department of Human Services office is located. In the application fill out all the required information and submit it.
If you do not have all the required information, complete as much of the application as you can this will help DHS workers determine your eligibility more quickly.

On October 1, 2022, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefit levels will automatically rise to reflect changes in the cost of living, helping households with low incomes cover their food needs and countering recent high food inflation.
Food budgets have been stretchedthin in recent months due to rapidly increasing prices for groceries and other necessities. Prices for groceries rose 12.2 percent for the 12 months ending June 2022 . Thats the largest 12-month increase since April 1979. SNAP maximum benefits, which are tied to food inflation, will increase by a similar percentage at the start of the next federal fiscal year in October.
The SNAP benefit update is based on food inflation for the 12 months ending in June 2022. The inflation report for July shows that inflation moderated in July, but prices for grocery food were up by 13.1 percent compared to July 2021.
SNAPs purpose is to increase low-income households purchasing power so they can afford a more nutritious diet. SNAP benefit levels are based on the cost of the Thrifty Food Plan , a set of foods that represent a nutritionally adequate diet that low-income households can purchase and prepare, assuming they take significant steps to stretch their food budget.
While high inflation rates are leading to larger cost-of-living adjustments this year, in most years the annual adjustments to SNAP benefits are small because food inflation is typically low.

More than 141,000 Iowa households benefit from food assistance
Food pantries and not-for-profits that work to address food insecurity are anticipating a surge in demand for their services as expanded food benefits in Iowa now have ended.
Iowa in February ended its coronavirus disaster proclamation and, in doing so, the state opted out of a federal emergency allotment provision that allowed households to receive the maximum benefit available under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps.
The end of expanded food assistance also comes as Iowans and others around the country are facing rising prices at the grocery store and at the gas pump, but in many cases, are not seeing much change in their paychecks.
As a result, food pantries in Eastern Iowa are preparing for an influx of clients in need.
We are definitely planning for an increase in need, and were already starting to hear from folks coming in asking to take a couple extra cans so they can stock-up, said Kaila Rome, executive director of the North Liberty Community Pantry. I know of a few families who are single-parent, one-child households that are losing over $200 a month.
