SALISBURY, N.C. — People who get help buying groceries through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, can now use these benefits when shopping online at a grocery store chain.
Food Lion says participants across the 10 states the company services can use their electronic benefit transfer, or EBT, card while using the Food Lion to Go service.
According to a release, participants will just need to link their SNAP/EBT food card information as a form of payment and then select the eligible food and grocery items they need, just as they would if they were shopping in the store.

Using the Food Lion to Go service will also customers to place an order online and then pick up their items on the same day.
The service works by clicking here, entering the zip code and select the closest participating store, adding groceries to the virtual cart, choose a time for pickup and checkout, and then go to the store to get it.

I was so excited that my local food lionwhich is great!was starting pickup. I ordered and had my time slot ready. I got an email and text saying they were running late. I then got a text that they had started shopping. I knew from my own shopping that the list I had was going to take at least an hour…. it took probably 1 1/2 hrs before I got a text saying it was ready. I loved that they kept me up to date. I dont mind having an hour window but it did throw my schedule off since I got my order about 40 min after the window. Also when I arrived and called the number listed and pressed one like it said, it didnt work. I finally called back a third or fourth time and chose customer service. They took about 10 min after that to get my groceries out. I have high hopes that this store will figure out a better system soon! I will probably try again in a few months when the bugs are worked out ) I did appreciate the welcome bag and as far as I saw all my produce was good quality!A note about the app: I recommend making it available to check status in app. It kept taking me to safari and honestly it wasnt working correctly. I also recommend trying like Walmart to add a button that says Im here So customers dont have to call a number. It just is helpful! Otherwise I felt the app was super easy to use 🙂

Virginians Using Snap Can Now Receive Food Lion Online Grocery Delivery Pick
PORTSMOUTH, Va. Virginians using SNAP can now use their benefits to receive online grocery delivery and pickup for Food Lion via Instacart a grocery shopping service.
The SNAP program began allowing online grocery ordering in May 2020 with partners such as Amazon and Walmart, though benefits were not to be used to cover the cost of delivery.
The initial partnership with Food Lion and Instacart launched in North Carolina in early February, and now, throughout Virginia alongside Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
Details are as follows, per Instacart:
- EBT SNAP online payment will now be available at more than 180 Food Lion stores across Virginia.
- EBT SNAP beneficiaries will be able to use their benefits for online grocery delivery and pickup at Food Lion.
- Customers will now be able to shop and select from Food Lions EBT SNAP eligible products. Once items are added to their cart, customers will be able to select how much of their benefits they would like to allocate to the order.
- To help subsidize costs for EBT SNAP beneficiaries, through March 16, Instacart will waive delivery and/or pickup fees on up to the first three EBT SNAP orders for each customer with a valid EBT card associated with their Instacart account.
This latest expansion follows the USDA Food and Nutrition Services most recent approval allowing Instacart and Food Lion to launch this SNAP online partnership.

San Francisco-based Instacart said Thursday that the capability is now available at more than 350 Food Lion supermarkets across North Carolina, covering about a third of the Ahold Delhaize USA chains store base. Food Lion shoppers receiving SNAP benefits can use the new EBT service for both online grocery delivery and pickup orders.

Currently, SNAP EBT payments are available only through the Instacart marketplace. At the site, Food Lion SNAP EBT customers select their local store and then shop eligible products.
