07 Jun 2019 — Low- and no-income families in the US, benefitting from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , may be eligible for subsidized purchases of multivitamin-mineral supplements with SNAP benefits, if corresponding amendments are made to the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. The introduction of the SNAP Vitamin and Mineral Improvement Act of 2019 in the US Senate and House of Representatives earlier this week was applauded by D.C.-based trade association and lobbying group Council for Responsible Nutrition . It argues the bill is needed because Americans are not getting enough nutrients from food alone.

The trade association for the dietary supplement and functional food industry has been lobbying for such a bill for some time. Many believe it will bridge nutrient gaps in low-income populations through greater access to dietary supplements.

A multivitamin, in combination with a balanced diet, can fill nutrient gaps, says Mike Greene, Senior Vice President, Government Relations at CRN. The facts have always been there, but the law has not. With the introduction of the SNAP Vitamin and Mineral Improvement Act, there is a glimmer of hope that we will be able to finally empower low-income consumers with a choice for better nutrition.

The US Senate last week passed the Farm Bill, including an amendment allowing food stamps to be used for the purchase of vitamin and mineral supplements.

The vitamin/mineral provision will allow consumers to use food stamps to purchase dietary supplements that provide vitamins or minerals. But an impact study will also have to be carried out to assess the technical issues, economic impacts and health effects of adding vitamins to the food stamp scheme.

The study will look at whether the quality of the diet has changed among participants in the scheme, as well as how much of the food stamp allotment was used on vitamin and mineral purchases. It will also assess whether food stamp scheme participants spend more on vitamins than non-participants and how much vitamins and minerals are used as a substitute for meals.

The study will also to look at potential difficulties in distinguishing between vitamin/mineral supplements and herbal supplements, which are not covered by the scheme.

The move to include vitamins and minerals in the food stamp scheme has been supported by industry members. John Cordaro, president and chief executive officer of the Council for Responsible Nutrition said the food stamp provision, would give families an opportunity to expand their daily dietary choices.

Some Georgia Families Can Receive $25650 In P

The Georgia Division of Family & Children Services in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education has been approved to operate the new Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer program.

This program will provide extra help to families of more than 1.1M children who normally would receive free or reduced school lunch.

Families will receive a one-time allotment of $256.50 in total P-EBT benefits per child.
