Arizona To Provide 765000 Children With $636 Million In Pandemic Ebt Benefits

PHOENIX – On Monday, the Arizona Department of Economic Security and the Arizona Department of Education announced the USDA Food and Nutrition Service authorized DES to reintroduce the Arizona P-EBT Benefits program and provide assistance to households with eligible children.

According to the department, an estimated more than $636 million will be distributed to about 765,000 children across Arizona.

The inclusion of children under 6 enrolled in SNAP will help ensure all families in need of assistance are able to support the nutrition of their children…” Michael Wisehart, DES Director said in a news release.

According to the department, P-EBT is available for every child in the household that either: is enrolled in the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act program in Arizona whose school is either closed or offering a full-time or part-time distance learning model due to the COVID-19 pandemic or who is under the age of 6 and receiving Nutrition Assistance .

DES said it anticipates Child Care P-EBT distribution will begin mid-march and distribution of P-EBT for school children will begin mid-April.

The monthly benefit amount depends on the schools designated learning model . A child can receive full payment, partial payment, or no payment for each month covered by the program. P-EBT is a complement to the meals and snacks currently provided to children through the Child Nutrition Programs. Receiving a meal does not prevent a child from receiving P-EBT.

Widespread Hunger Expected To Persist

The American Rescue Plan Act also provides additional funding to states for the next three years, to accommodate increased demand for SNAP benefits.

More than 10% of households said they sometimes or often didnt have enough to eat as of March 1, according to theU.S. Census Bureaus Household Pulse survey. If you only count households that have children, that rate goes up to more than 14%.

That rate of food insecurity is consistent with data from December, indicating that as the pandemic wears on, many families struggle to access food has continued.States and cities continue to reopenandvaccination rates have increased, but people are still dealing with the health and financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, especially those who havent been able to return to work yet.

And the countrys hunger problem could actually worsen in 2021. Last year, about one in seven Americans experienced food insecurity, defined by the USDA as having limited or uncertain access to nutritious food this year, hunger relief network Feeding Americapredicts that rate will still be higher than pre-pandemic levels, with one in eight Americans facing food insecurity.

President Bidens American Rescue Plan components, includingdirect payments, thechild tax credit expansionand food assistance funding, have the potential to cut child poverty in half in 2021. It takes a considerable investment to start seeing those gains: $12 billion of the funds from the legislation will go toward food assistance.
