With more Americans claiming food assistance amid the pandemic, more states and stores are letting consumers use their benefits when ordering groceries online for pickup or delivery.
Participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, can pay in store at most major grocery chains including “specialty” grocery stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s using electronic benefits transfer cards. But until last year, EBT wasn’t a widely available payment option online. Now, thanks to the continued expansion of an online purchasing pilot program run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, households receiving SNAP benefits in 47 states and the District of Columbia can use EBT to pay for grocery pickup and/or delivery from a number of retailers .
The list of participating states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Alaska, Louisiana, and Montana are the only states that have not enrolled in the pilot.

After placing your order, a Kroger associate is assigned to shop for you and complete the list before you pull in for pickup. Then, drive to the stores location and look for the pickup signs when its time for you to pick up your groceries. The pickup signs have a contact number that you have to dial to inform the store of your arrival. After pulling into the parking spot, call the number so an associate can bring out your order.

When a curbside or delivery order is placed, a temporary hold is placed on your payment method for slightly more than the order total to cover any changes in the order total that might occur when your order is shopped. It is common for the order total to change due to weighted items, additions, and/or substitutions. Once your order is complete, your card will be charged for the final order total reflected on your order receipt, which can be more or less than the temporary hold amount. Please refer to the payment details on your order receipt for the final order total and the amount previously authorized when you placed the order.
If your order is canceled prior to being shopped, your bank will remove the temporary hold from your account. Please refer to your order confirmation email for the estimated amount of your order and the temporary hold amount authorized.
