411c8db9

COLUMBIA, S.C. The state of South Carolina has extended the deadline to allow people to receive federal emergency SNAP benefits through the end of the year, a move that will allow hundreds of thousands of people to get help with affording food.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Department of Social Services Director Michael Leach agreed to an extension of the benefits in an exchange of letters between the two this week. The decision was announced Friday.

The money paid to families and individuals from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program goes to help lower income elderly and young South Carolinians afford groceries.

York County resident, Craig Cloninger, is new to the SNAP benefits program. With the help of state non-profit, SC Thrive, he got approved two weeks ago.

“The overall cost of food has gone up so much,” said Cloninger. “It takes a huge portion of my income just to survive.”

Cloninger is on disability and has a limited income. With the emergency benefits extended, his monthly SNAP payments will increase from $19 per month to $234.

“With an additional amount, it’s going to make a difference because you can feed yourself for the month and not have to worry about not eating and things like that,” he said. “It relieves a lot of mental anguish and stress off of you.”

Emergency supplements for August will affect an estimated 300,000 households.

How To Appeal A South Carolina Food Stamps Denial

When the DSS issues a food stamps denial in South Carolina, it means that the department did not believe the petitioners qualified to receive funding. DSS case workers can reject petitions for a multitude of reasons. However, claimants who disagree with these rulings have 90 days to file appeals to the state and request that someone else reviews their applications.

Filing a late petition may cause the department to reject applicants claims entirely. Therefore, candidates who want to file an appeal need to be sure they do so within this window of opportunity. Claimants who learn that their food stamps application was denied may make their requests either verbally or in writing. However, petitioners may only make oral requests if they call the Office of Administrative Hearings and speak to a certification worker or supervisor.

In order to fully initiate the food stamps appeal process, petitioners must be sure that they include along with their requests any evidence they want to submit to the state. Applicants must also decide if they would prefer an in-person or phone hearing. There is no penalty or advantage to choosing one method over the other.
