Pa Is Expanding Eligibility For Snap Benefits Also Known As Food Stamps

As a pediatrician in Philadelphia, I am thrilled that the state is expanding this support. However, lawmakers must continue to work toward a future where no child is hungry.

In 2020, the number of Pennsylvanians experiencing food insecurity was 1,136,400, or about twice the population of the entire state of Wyoming. Fortunately, that number may begin to fall this month.

Thats thanks to new legislation signed by the Wolf administration that expands the ranks of those who are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , formerly known as the food stamp program. Since Oct. 1, 420,000 more Pennsylvanians have been eligible to receive monthly benefits to help cover the cost of food. Under the previous terms of the program, households without elderly or disabled members could only qualify if they earned less than 160% of the federal poverty income guidelines. Now those earning under 200% do, too.

This policy change is particularly important in Philadelphia, where more than a quarter of food-insecure residents fall between these income thresholds under the old standard, their incomes were too high to qualify for SNAP but too low to afford the food they need. As a pediatrician in Philadelphia who cares for many children and families facing food insecurity, I am thrilled that the state is expanding this support. However, lawmakers must continue to work toward a future where no child, in our state or any other, is hungry. There is still more work to do.

Option 1 Check Your Last Receipt

The first option for checking your Pennsylvania EBT Card balance is to check your last receipt.

This is the easiest and quickest way to locate the current balance on your Pennsylvania EBT Card.

Once you locate your last receipt, the card balance will be listed at the bottom of your grocery store receipt or the ATM receipt if you also get cash benefits.

You should get in the habit of keeping your most current EBT receipt, that way, you always have a quick way to check your balance before you shop.

What hasnt changed is when you will get your November payment. As usual, it depends on your state. Although SNAP is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the program itself is administered at the state level, and each state and U.S. territory has its own monthly schedule for when payments are made.

Payments are now made with Electronic Benefits Transfer cards instead of food stamps, although some states might have a different name for the cards.

Cards can be swiped at checkout in grocery stores, major retailers and other outlets, similar to debit cards. You will need to enter your PIN to complete the transaction.
