Whats Going On With Ebt In Washington State

Washington State Department of Social & Health Services originally announced that the state would not be issuing extra food stamps after November 2022 because the state was ending their emergency health declaration.

However, on November 29, the state announced that they had a declaration in place that would allow them to continue issuing emergency allotments after the states emergency ended. This approval allows them to continue sending the maximum allotment to all households who are eligible for at least $1 in EBT in December 2022. The state also said they would continue to seek month-to-month approvals to extend these extra benefits.

It is not immediately clear how the state was able to pull this off. Ive reached out to Washington DSHS for more information.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program began back in March 2020 to combat the hit in earnings that millions of families were feeling as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns and general economic turmoil.

The rising cost of living and lack of wage growth that has continued into 2022 means that the scheme continually got renewed as it was clear many families could not do without that extra help.

Which States Will Pay Emergency Food Benefits In January

According to the USDA, the following states will continue to pay emergency food benefits in January:

There is a lot of uncertainty around the emergency allotment payments right now. On the one hand, the government has not officially extended the public health emergency beyond January 11. On the other, it has said it will give 60 days notice before any termination. Given that we’re now in January, we can assume the health emergency will be in place until at least the start of March. At this point, many assume it will continue until April but we don’t know for sure.

How Much Longer Will Emergency Benefits Last

Snap

The emergency SNAP allocations are tied to the federal public health emergency. It was first introduced in January 2020 and has been extended every 90 days since then. The last extension was announced on Oct. 13, but it isn’t clear what will happen next year.

The Department of Health and Human Services previously stated it would give 60 days’ notice before terminating the health emergency. Given that we’re now at the end of November and no notice has been given, the health emergency and associated emergency benefits is unlikely to be over before the end of January 2023.

Individual states also play a part as SNAP is administered at a local level. Each state decides on whether it will extend the extra payments on a month-by-month basis. This month, fewer states have announced extensions.

Why Didnt You Get Your Food Stamps This Month

Weve heard from many users all over the US who are saying that their expected benefits have not arrived. If the money never arrived at all, its probably due to a paperwork backlog.

We have confirmed that there has been a major backlog of benefits in Georgia, which was cleared up just before Thanksgiving, thanks to a waiver received from the federal government. That waiver only lasts six months, so this issue could happen again in May so please be careful and try to prepare if you can.

Hawaii has had similar issues keeping up with the paperwork, but theyve also received a waiver and should start clearing that backlog soon. Again, those waivers are always temporary so you need to be prepared to have this issue again within about six months unless the state can resolve its staffing issues.

If you havent received your benefits, you can contact your state for more information.

Make sure youve completed your recertification paperwork and any required interviews. Do not wait to do that paperwork until the last minute do it as soon as it shows up, because otherwise you may be waiting even longer to get those benefits.
