Missouri renews food stamps to ease coronavirus worries

The SNAP program has eligibility standards for both gross and net monthly income. Most people will need to fit within both the gross and net income guidelines in order to be eligible. Exceptions to this include the elderly. For households including at least one person over the age of 60, only the net income standard is applied. Another exception is those receiving TANF and SSI.

The table below shows the maximum gross and net monthly income based on family size for SNAP eligibility. The gross income is the income you make prior to any deductions. Net income is after deductions. The only exceptions to the chart below are Alaska and Hawaii, which have higher income limits due to the significant increase in cost of living.

How To Determine Eligibility For Snap Benefits

Financial eligibility for SNAP is determined based on the households size, income and resources. Households are defined as a person living alone or a group of people living together who buy and prepare their meals together. They generally must meet two income requirements tests to qualify for SNAP: a gross income test and a net income test. Gross income is the households total income before deductions, and the net income is the households total income after allowable deductions are made.

Households with an elderly or disabled person, however, must only meet the net income limit. Moreover, certain people will automatically qualify for nutrition assistance without regard to net or gross income. This includes households in which all or at least one person receives GR benefits, TANF benefits or SSI .

When Will I Know If I’m Approved

You will typically know if you are approved for SNAP within 30 days. The Family Support Division will process your application and any supporting documentation as soon as they receive it. This can take up to 10 days. Once your application is processed, you will get a letter that lets you know if you are eligible for SNAP benefits or not.

In some emergency cases, you can get SNAP benefits in seven days or less. You will need to complete Section 2 of your SNAP application to see if you are eligible. You can also tell the Family Support Division if these questions apply to you when you submit your application.
