Pa Announces New Income Limits For Snap Benefits

HARRISBURG, Pa. Pennsylvania health officials announced Tuesday new income requirements to receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program .

The United States Department of Agricultures Food and Nutrition Service annually evaluates the income eligibility standards, the Maximum Thrifty Food Plan and the minimum benefit amount.

Enrollment for SNAP statewide has increased by 105,624 people since February, for a total enrollment of about 1,843,083 in August a 6% increase.

Below are the SNAP income limits beginning October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021:

Below are the changes to the Maximum Thrifty Food Plan effective October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021. The Maximum Thrifty Food Plan is the maximum number of benefits a household can receive.

There are no changes to the minimum benefit amount it will remain at $16 through September 30, 2021.

Factors that contribute to higher SNAP allowances and income limits in Pennsylvania include household size, monthly income and if a member of your household is 60 years old or older, or has a disability.

Pennsylvanians who need more immediate help feeding themselves or their family should find and contact their local food bank or pantry through Feeding Pennsylvania and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania.

Snap Income Eligibility In Pa

Due to the nature of the program, states are allowed to set their own income limits through a policy called Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility . In Pennsylvania, the threshold was set to include households within 160% of the federal poverty level.

That changed on Oct. 1, when the state government expanded access to all qualifying households within 200% of the federal poverty level. Meaning, individuals making $2,266 a month or households of four with a monthly income of $4,626 can now apply for SNAP.

This modification is estimated to expand benefits to an additional 420,000 Pennsylvanians.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the new name for the Food Stamp program. These benefits are used to buy food and help eligible low-income households in Pennsylvania obtain more nutritious diets by increasing their food purchasing power at grocery stores and supermarkets. If you are eligible, you will receive a Pennsylvania Electronic Benefits Transfer ACCESS Card which is used to make food purchases at grocery stores and supermarkets.

There are seven allowable deductions that you can consider when determining your net pay. To figure out your net income, you have to figure out which allowable deductions apply to your situations and deduct them from your gross income. The difference is your net income.

Wolf Administration Announces Expanded Food Assistance Eligibility For Families Facing Food Insecurity

Governor Tom Wolf announced today that more Pennsylvanians experiencing food insecurity are now eligible for support from Pennsylvanias network of food banks and pantries. Income eligibility for both the State Food Purchase Program and The Emergency Food Assistance Program , U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded programs administered at the state level, have been raised from 150% of the USDA-established poverty level to 185%.

I want to do everything I can to support success for Pennsylvanians, thats why weve prioritized expanding income eligibility to allow more families to benefit from our charitable food system, said Governor Wolf. No one should have to choose between putting food on the table or paying for the other essentials in life.

The Wolf Administration acted to expand eligibility by increasing the level from 150% to 185% following a recommendation from the Emergency Food Assistance Advisory Committee. This increase allows Pennsylvanias charitable food system to serve more food insecure Pennsylvanians who make just above the current income limit and also brings the SFPP and TEFAP in line with other food assistance programs such as SNAP, reduced-price school breakfast and lunches provided through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program, and the Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

What If I Am A College Student

To participate in SNAP, a student, in college at least half time, must meet the for SNAP and one of the following criteria:

• Be employed for an average of 20 hours per week and be paid for such employment or, if self-employed, be employed for an average of 20 hours per week and receive weekly earnings at least equal to the Federal minimum wage multiplied by 20 hours.
• Participate in a State or Federally financed work study program during the regular school year.
• Provide more than half the physical care for one or more dependent household members under the age of six or provide more than half the physical care of dependent household member who has reached the age of six but is under the age of 12 where adequate child care is not available.
• Enrolled full-time in an institution of higher education and is a single parent with responsibility for the care of a dependent child under age 12.
