Food Stamp Income Limit In Ga In 2021

Household size is one of the biggest determining factors for income limits for SNAP participants. You can earn anywhere from $16,744 to $58,058 as maximum income per year, depending on the household size. That income range covers households of between one and eight people.

For example, if you live with a spouse, you can earn a total of $22,646. But if you and your spouse have two kids, the maximum income limit could go up to $34,450.

Beyond the eight-person limit, you are allowed to increase your maximum household income by $5,902 per person per year. So, for example, if there are nine members in your household, all of you can earn a total of $63,960 and still qualify for Georgia food stamps.

In addition, you can also get away with having additional resources beyond your food stamp income limit in GA in 2021 and still stay within SNAP. Currently, the acceptable countable resources limits stand at:

  • Under $2,001 in both your savings and checking accounts
  • Under $3,001 in both your savings and checking accounts if you live with one or more persons over 60 years old or someone with a disability

Remember, you are allowed to deduct some expenses to bring down your maximum income. These include legally owed child support, medical expenses for the elderly, educational expenses and so on. It would be wise of you to take advantage of these deductions to increase the SNAP benefits you could get.

Food Stamps For Seniors

Many seniors who are struggling in these tough economic times may not be aware that they are eligible for food stamps. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — the official name of the food stamp program — helps low-income seniors buy the food they need.

Food stamps can be used to purchase food or food-related products, including seeds and plants to grow food, but not to buy alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, or hot food. The amount of food stamps you can receive varies depending on your household’s size and income, but the maximum allotment for October 1, 2015 through September 30, 2016 is $194 a month for a one-person household and $357 for a two-person household in the lower 48 states. The money is distributed through a plastic EBT card, much like a debit card, which can be used at most grocery stores.

Was This The Best Way To Do It

Note that Congress did not allow the states to expand the number of participants beyond the normal eligibility criteria for the program. The P-SNAP benefits of $581,085,040 spent since March were spent on those who would have normally qualified for the benefits.

Consequently, the households who benefited the most from the extra funding were those households with the higher incomes just under the eligibility limits. My next blog will show in greater detail how P-SNAP caused the welfare cliff to jump in magnitude.

In the meantime, if you have an opinion on whether this was a fair way to allocate extra funding for food stamps, be sure to let us know in the comments below.

For Snap Policy Advocates

The Importance of SNAP Policy Advocacy

SNAP participation has been historically lower among older adults than in other age groups with approximately 35% of eligible older adults participate in the program, compared to 67% of all eligible individuals. Common barriers that have been identified include a complicated application process, confusion about eligibility and benefits, and limited access to and use of technology. Furthermore, only 14% of eligible older adults and the disabled claim the medical expense deduction. There are many ways to study and better understand to help improve the participation of this vulnerable population through SNAP policy research and advocacy.
