The United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service has not responded to Missouris request to continue to waive required interviews for Food Stamp/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for new applicants and recipients undergoing recertification. Due to COVID-19, the USDA previously approved Department of Social Services waiver requests to temporarily suspend interviews. Without USDA approval of a waiver, Missouri must resume the interview requirement beginning July 1. For the health and safety of Missourians, the Family Support Division is conducting the Food Stamp/SNAP interviews by telephone only for July. Once the client has submitted an application or recertification, the Family Support Division will call to conduct the interview. Missouri Residents Having A Hard Time Getting Snap Benefits

COLUMBIA, Mo.

Missouri residents who rely on the states Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are having a hard time receiving their benefits according to a lawsuit uncovered by KMOV in St.Louis.

Gov. Mike Parson says the call center needs to be built up to handle the influx of calls it receives to handle more cases as demand has increased for the program and that the state needs to do a better job.

I think its a combination of how do you handle that many calls, the influx of calls that are coming. You know, I think the last that I knew is about 500 behind there on that and we just have to do better than that, Parson said.

The governor also says that those who do use the SNAP program should not contact the state first but, instead try local resources first.

Parson said, I think one is to make sure people let people know that they can go sign up on the local levels, I think a lot of them kinda go to the state and think this is where you do but I think you also have to remind people to do it on the local levels to and then we are going to do out part.

In the investigation done by KMOV, it uncovered the lawsuit is suing the state over some issues like long wait times to get through the call center for their benefits.

Other allegations include people who are applying for/or renewing benefits are directed to the call center that is short-staffed and more than 50% of denied applications were due to applicants not being able to complete the interview.

How Long Will I Get Help

You can get SNAP benefits for as long as you are eligible for help. You will be required to complete a mid-certification and a recertification each year you get SNAP to make sure your household is still eligible. If you do not return your information by the deadline on the form, you may lose your benefits.

• Your mid-certification will happen halfway through your benefit period. We will send you a form in the mail that must be completely filled out, signed, and all pages returned to the Family Support Division by the deadline so you do not lose your benefits. You must complete this form even if you do not have any changes.
• Around the end of your SNAP benefit period, you will get a recertification packet in the mail. You will need to complete this, return it to the Family Support Division, and complete an interview to continue getting SNAP benefits.
