Will Amazon Accept Food Stamps Next
Walmarts biggest rival Amazon is also interested in getting a piece of the food stamp pie. The Everything Store was on a list of companies that signed for the United States Department of Agriculture test of SNAP payment for online grocery orders, CNBC reported.
There is no evidence that Amazon is participating in SNAP but it just purchased Whole Foods Market, which operates around 400 standalone grocery stores in the USA. Since Amazon is cutting prices at Whole Paycheck, adding SNAP benefits would be a logical progression. New stories indicate that Amazon plans to add pickup and returns for online merchandise at some of its stores.
Amazon is also accepting returns via Kohls a department store that targets working-class customers, CNBC reported. Since food stamps are now a regular feature of working-class life in the United States Amazon will need to tap them to attract such customers.
This will be a major threat to dollar store operators Dollar Tree and Dollar General which depend heavily on working-class customers. Also in Amazons crosshairs is the fast-growing discount grocery chain Aldi which is now a fixture in many lower-income neighborhoods in the Rust Belt.
The first state to actually launch an online EBT program was New York, starting in 2019.

There is a loophole, however. Some Whole Foods items, such as the 365 brand, are available through Amazon groceries, which accepts EBT as a payment method. Who Is Eligible For This Program
To be eligible for this benefit program, applicants must live in the state in which they apply and meet certain bank balance limits. A household with an elderly person over 60 years or a disabled household member may have a higher bank balance limit.
In order to be eligible for free delivery on Amazon Fresh orders, you need to purchase $35 or more of eligible items. It is not possible to use your SNAP EBT card to pay for shipping fee if you do not meet the order minimum and you will need to provide another form of payment.
