Please note the following:
- The USDA has temporarily expanded SNAPeligibility for students enrolled at least part-time in a higher education institution.
- A manual application cannot be processed and is not considered complete until it is signed and received by your local department.
- An interview will be required unless you meet the conditions for a waiver.Proof of identity , residence, income, resource and shelter expenses will be required.
- Applications for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or General Relief, are considered an application for SNAP, unless you request otherwise.
- If all members have applied for or get Supplemental Security Income , you may also apply for SNAP at the local Social Security office.
How Are Benefits Calculated
After looking at countable resources and income, DWS will deduct certain expenses from income to establish your benefit amount. The income deductions include:
- A standard deduction for all households
- A 20 percent earned income deduction
- A deduction for child care or dependent care costs that you pay a caretaker in order to work
- A standard rent and utility allowance
- A deduction for monthly medical expenses over $35 for the disabled or for those over age 60
- A deduction for some educational expenses
- A deduction for child support paid as an obligor
A household that pays more medical expenses in a certain month can have its food stamps adjusted and receive more benefits the next month to offset the high medical bills.
How Do I Go About Getting Snap
If you want to find out if you may be eligible to receive SNAP, visit myBenefits.ny.gov and click on Am I Eligible? to use the SNAP pre-screening eligibility tool. Please note: This pre-screening tool is not an application for SNAP.
In order to apply for SNAP, you need to file an electronic or paper application with your local county Department of Social Services, or, if you live in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with your local SNAP Center.
If you decide to submit a paper application, the SNAP office must give you an application form on the same day you ask for one. The office also must accept and register your application on the same day you turn it in.
You may submit, and the SNAP office must accept, your application as long as you have filled in your name, address and telephone number and signed the application. However, you should try to provide as much information as you can. Whatever information you cannot provide, a SNAP worker can help you complete at your eligibility interview.
You may have a complete eligibility interview done on the same day you file your application, or you may be asked to come back another day for a complete interview. If you qualify for SNAP, you must get them no later than 30 days from the date the office got your application.

When You Live With Family
Minors aged 18 years or younger who live with their parents, foster parents or other family members or caretakers are not eligible to apply for food stamps on their own. Rather, the household must apply on the basis that the combined household income that’s the total wages of everyone working falls below the SNAP income limit. The limit test varies depending on the number of people in the household. If there were four of you, for example, the combined income must be less than $2,665 gross and $2,050 net in 2018.
What Is An Abawd Required To Do
To maintain eligibility for SNAP benefits for more than three months in the 36-month period that started January 1, 2019, an ABAWD must complete and document participation in one of the following each month:
- Work for at least 80 hours per month
- Participate in a qualifying work/training program approved by the social services district for at least 80 hours per month
- Comply with a Work Experience Program assignment for the number of hours per month equal to the SNAP grant divided by the higher of the federal or State minimum wage.
- Participate in an employment and training program for veterans operated by the Department of Labor or the Department of Veteranââ¬â¢s Affairs for at least 80 hours per month.
- Participate in a program under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act or Trade Act which may include job search, job readiness, occupational skills training and education activities for at least 80 hours a month or
- Participate in a combination of work or qualifying work programs for at least 80 hours a month.
Note: New York State is currently operating under a federal waiver of the ABAWD time limit in all areas of the State for the period October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2022 so no ABAWD is subject to the time limit requirement during this period.

What If I Am An Able
Adults between the ages of 18 and 49 who are living in a Food Stamp household without a minor child are subject to special rules. ABAWDs are limited to 3 months of benefits during a 36-month period. In order to continue receiving benefits past the initial 3-month eligibility period, the participant must:
- Be employed 80 hours a month or
- Participate in an employment learning activity consisting of 24 hours a month at a work site or 20 hours a month at work training or

About the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps low-income households in Colorado purchase food. It provides a monthly benefit that helps families and individuals buy the food they need for good health.
The benefit is provided based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. Electronic Benefit Transfer cards are used to receive the benefit and can be used similar to debit cards at participating food stores. The benefit can be doubled in value by shopping at participating markets and food stores that support the Double Up Food Bucks program.

Are There Other Eligibility Requirements
Even though you have limited income, you may not be eligible for Food Stamps. If you are 60 years of age or older, are disabled, or have dependent children, you will likely qualify. On the other hand, if you have no dependent children and are considered able-bodied, you may receive Food Stamps only under limited circumstances.
Considering Additional Family Members
You cannot apply for food stamps independently of your family. The income of your entire household is used to determine your eligibility this means your parents or guardians, siblings and extended family who live in your home and share meals or expenses. To qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, applicants must meet certain non-financial and financial requirements. Non-financial requirements include state residency, citizenship/alien status, work registration and cooperation with the IMPACT program. Financial criteria include income and asset limits.

The answer is yes, BAH income is typically counted towards your gross income when determining if you are eligible for food stamps. As such, your GI Bill benefits do contribute to your income, even though that income is temporary and not taxed. Food Stamps For The Elderly & Disabled
It has been mentioned in the above eligibility requirements that households containing an elderly or disabled individual are held to different requirements. This includes increased limits for both income and resources. In order to fall under the special eligibility requirements, the following definitions are used.
Elderly:

Disabled:
