Why Can You Buy This Stuff
Strictly speaking, the USDA says you can use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to buy any food for the household, but you cannot buy non-food items. Youre supposed to purchase food for human consumption only.
The law states, The term food means any food or food product for human consumption except alcoholic beverages, tobacco, those foods which are identified on the package as being imported, and meat and meat products which are imported.
Now, there are some situations where you can buy items that arent strictly food. As we covered in another post, youre allowed to purchase seeds, produce-bearing plants, and even gift baskets when at least half the baskets value comes from eligible food items.
Thats the rule: at least half the value of the non-food item must be from the food.
That creates a bit of a gray area. Many of the EBT-eligible items I found on Amazon fall into that gray area.
However, some of the items I found were clearly mistakes. With a retailer as big and complicated as Amazon, theres bound to be glitches in the system. According to Amazons EBT question and answer section, The Grocery and Gourmet Food category on Amazon features pantry staples, shelf-stable food and household items available nationwide.
Pay With Cash: How It Works
- Customers go to Walmart.com from any Internet-connected device to select an item and place an order.
- During checkout, the customer selects the cash option and their shipping preference. Customer immediately receives an order number on the order confirmation page and an email receipt with their order number. The item is reserved in the system.
- The customer has 48-hours to take the printed order form to any cash register of any Walmart store or Neighborhood Market.
- Once cash payment is completed in the store and received, shipping then occurs via Site to Store or to their preferred address.
Hundreds of thousands of items at Walmart.com are now available for Pay with Cash which includes categories such as baby, health and beauty, toys, home décor, electronics, household appliances, and more, and can also be shipped to a customers preferred address or their local Walmart store using the Site to Store option. How Do I Check Out With My Snap Ebt/ebt Cash Card
In the payments section of the checkout page, enter your SNAP EBT card information and click Apply Payment. Choose the SNAP and/or EBT Cash amount youd like to use. If the total amount for SNAP-eligible items is higher than your SNAP balance amount, or to pay for any non-SNAP eligible items, you can use another form of payment to cover the difference.

How Can Ebt And Food Stamps Be Used To Buy Other Food Items
In general, EBT and food stamps can only be used to buy food items that are considered ready-to-eat. This means that hot foods, like those that you would find in a restaurant, are not typically covered by these programs.
However, there are some exceptions. For example, some states have started to allow EBT and food stamp recipients to use their benefits to buy hot foods from certain vendors. And in some cases, people with EBT or food stamp benefits may be able to use them to buy other food items, like ingredients for a hot meal, if they meet certain criteria.
If youre interested in using your EBT or food stamp benefits to buy hot foods, its best to check with your states program rules first. That way, youll know what options are available to you and how to go about using your benefits to purchase the items you need.

Maximum Monthly Amounts On Food Stamps
There is a maximum monthly allotment based on the size of the household. When determining your benefit allotment, they will take your net monthly income and multiply it by 30%. That number will then be subtracted from the maximum monthly allotment. The remaining amount is the total monthly allotment you will receive based on your application. This amount may change if your income or household size changes.
SNAP benefits are a specific money amount provided to recipients each month to go towards nutritional foods. Recipients are provided with an electronic benefits transfer card, and money is added to the card each month. You can check your balance by phone, and any unused funds at the end of the month remain on the card to be used to following month. Once allocated, benefits will not expire.
Benefits can be used to buy food and drinks at most grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations, pharmacies that sell food, and farmers markets. Benefits cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco, medicine, hot food, food meant to be eaten in the store, or any non-food items.

Where You Can Order Groceries Online With An Ebt Card
As more Americans have sought food assistance amid the pandemic, more states and stores have started letting consumers use their benefits when ordering groceries online for pickup or delivery.
Participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, can pay in store at most major grocery chains including specialty grocery stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joes using electronic benefits transfer cards. But, until last year, EBT wasnt a widely available payment option online. Now, through the expedited expansion of an online purchasing pilot program run by the U.S. Department of Agricultures Food and Nutrition Service, households receiving SNAP benefits in 47 states and the District of Columbia can use EBT to pay for grocery pickup and/or delivery from select retailers .
The list of participating states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Alaska, Louisiana, and Montana are the only states that have not enrolled in the pilot.

Ebt Benefits At Walmart Online
Once youve added your payment information you can start adding items to your online shopping cart. As youre shopping, you can view your cart and see the total for EBT-eligible items.
After reviewing your items, select Checkout to proceed. From there, youll select the checkbox to pay with EBT, enter the amount youd like to use, and hit continue. If your EBT funds dont cover the entire order, Walmart says you can divvy up the remaining amount with a personal debit or credit card.
After selecting Continue, you will be directed to an external page to enter your EBT benefits PIN. After you input your PIN, youll be moved back to Walmart to finish up the order.

Definition Of A Household
When determining eligibility, you need to provide information on all members of the household. A household, for this situation, is defined as all individuals that live together and purchase and prepare meals together. Likewise, you may have people living with you that are not considered part of your household. For example, if you rent a room to someone that does not purchase or prepare food with you, they are not part of your household. However, whatever they pay you for rent has to be counted under income.
There are two exceptions to this definition. The first is a household that includes a husband, wife, and children under 22 years of age. This group will be considered a household even if they purchase and prepare meals separately. The second exception is elderly or disabled individuals that are unable to purchase and prepare their meals independently and live with others that do.

Yes. You can pay for your order using your EBT card and another form of payment at pickup.
If you ordered non-SNAP eligible items, the Walmart associate at the pick-up location will swipe your EBT Card for EBT-eligible items. You can then provide another form of payment for items that are not on the EBT approved list.
