The SNAP program helps low-income people buy nutritious food. Anyone can apply for the program no matter what their age or whether or not they have dependents. All that matters is that your income qualifies. In 2018, you must earn less than $1,307 per month before taxes and $1,005 per month after taxes to qualify for the program. Special rules apply to college students interested in applying for food stamps. If you’re under 18 and attending post-secondary school, whether it’s a four-year college or a vocational school, you automatically qualify for benefits even if you are not working. The work requirement of being employed at least 20 hours a week, which applies to most students, won’t apply to you until you reach 18.
What Are Food Stamps In Washington
Claimants who are permitted to accept SNAP food benefits in Washington will find this program to be supportive and financially helpful. With these food stamps benefits, enrollees are able to purchase many different types of foods and beverages. SNAP was created by the federal government as a way to supply low-income households with the financial means to buy nutritious foods at the grocery store. Food insecurity is a major problem throughout the United States, and many families who go to the supermarket cannot afford to purchase high-quality foods. However, SNAP benefits and the food stamps program aims to counteract these issues.
SNAP enrollees who collect food assistance benefits in Washington can use their funds to buy various types of consumable goods. For example, beneficiaries can purchase foods from the basic food groups, including fresh meat, seafood, vegetables and fruit. However, claimants may not buy:
- Inedible household products.
- Vitamins and certain energy drinks.
- Animal food.
- Hot, premade meals.
What Is The Abawd 3
Many childless adults ages 18 through 49 years can only recieve three months of SNAP in a 36 month period unless the individual is exempt or meeting certain work rules. This federal SNAP rule affects individuals determined to be able-bodied adults without dependents or ABAWDs. 106 C.M.R. § 362.320. If you are ages 18-49, you may be exempt from this rule if you are disabled, homeless or meeting other rules. See Question 61.
If you are not exempt, you may only get 3 months of SNAP in a 3 year period unless you are:
- Working at least 20 hours a week on average. This includes paid or unpaid work .
- Participating in a DTA approved training or education activity for at least 20 hours a week on average. See more about the SNAP Path to Work in Question 65.
- Doing a combination of training or education and job search activities for 20 hours/week , or
- Doing volunteer work, called community service at an approved non-profit organization that agrees to track your volunteer hours. The number of hours you need to do community service is determined by the amount of your SNAP grant divided by the states minimum wage
Example: James receives the max $194/month SNAP. He needs to do 15 hours a month of volunteer or community service work. If his SNAP benefit was $110/ month, he would need to do 8 hours of community service per month.

How Long Will I Get Help
You can get SNAP benefits for as long as you are eligible for help. You will be required to complete a mid-certification and a recertification each year you get SNAP to make sure your household is still eligible. If you do not return your information by the deadline on the form, you may lose your benefits.
- Your mid-certification will happen halfway through your benefit period. You will get a form in the mail that you will need to complete and return to the Family Support Division.
- Around the end of your SNAP benefit period, you will get a recertification form in the mail. You will need to complete this form, return it to the Family Support Division, and complete an interview to continue getting SNAP benefits.
NOTE: It is important that you report any changes to your contact information, including your address, so you will get these important letters in the mail. If you do not respond to mail from the FSD, you could lose your benefit.
How To Apply For Food Stamps In Washington
Candidates wondering how to apply for food stamps should review the three main ways they can submit their petitions to the DSHS. These methods are as follows:
- Contacting the Community Services Office : Applicants can call or visit the CSO and request paper copies of petition forms. When petitioners call the office and request applications, representatives will generally mail forms directly to the candidates.
- Submitting an online food stamps application: Petitioners can create online profiles on the states website and file their SNAP petitions on the computer.
- Candidates who would like to print copies of their applications and fill them out at home may do so by visiting the DSHSs website. After filling them out, petitioners need to deliver their completed applications to the department.

Can My Children Get Benefits If I Am An Ineligible Immigrant
You have the right to apply for eligible household members including U.S. citizen children and spouses. If you or other household members do not have legal status or do not wish to receive SNAP, you can exclude yourself from the SNAP application.
As part of the SNAP application, DTA wil ask about all household members who purchase and prepare food together. Even though part of the “household,” non-citizens can designate the household members not applying for SNAP benefits. You are not required to give proof of your immigration status if you are not applying to get SNAP for yourself. 106 C.M.R. § 362.220. However, if you are the parent of a child or spouse, you must give DTA with information about your income and expenses. DTA will count your income in calculation the SNAP benefits for dependents.

Please note the following:
- The USDA has temporarily expanded SNAPeligibility for students enrolled at least part-time in a higher education institution.
- A manual application cannot be processed and is not considered complete until it is signed and received by your local department.
- An interview will be required unless you meet the conditions for a waiver.Proof of identity , residence, income, resource and shelter expenses will be required.
- Applications for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or General Relief, are considered an application for SNAP, unless you request otherwise.
- If all members have applied for or get Supplemental Security Income , you may also apply for SNAP at the local Social Security office.

State Supplements And Food Stamp Receipt
Because the FSP benefit is nationally uniform , it would be reasonable to expect that the prevalence of food stamp receipt would be lower in states with a substantial SSI supplement than in states without. However, separate calculation of FSP prevalence in states grouped by size of supplement revealed no clear pattern. For the elderly, living in a high supplement state is associated with higher, not lower, prevalence of food stamp receipt. For children, the opposite is true. It may be that the effect of high benefits is offset by high living costs. On average, housing coststhe key component of interstate variation in costs of livingare positively correlated with the presence and amount of the SSI state supplement.5
Who Can Be Included In My Snap Case
- A SNAP household may consist of an individual or a group of individuals who purchase food and prepare meals together.
- Each eligible SNAP household member must be a United States citizen or meet non-citizen requirements.
- A non-citizen is required to provide their United States Citizenship and Immigration Services documentation and the Agency must verify the validity of the provided documents through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program. The SAVE Program is a service that helps federal, state, and local benefit-issuing agencies, institutions, and licensing agencies determine the immigration status of benefit applicants so only those entitled to benefits receive them.

What Is The Abawd Work Requirement
SNAP recipients aged 18-49 years old, who are Able-Bodied Adults without Dependents and who do not meet an exception to the ABAWD work requirement, must meet the work requirement by working, participating in a work program, or any combination of working or participating in a work program for 20 hours a week, averaged as 80 hours a month, or participating in and complying with a workfare program.
How Long To Get Approved For Florida Food Stamps
Once you submit a complete application, your caseworker will schedule an interview with you to review your application information and ask any questions they may have about the information you submitted.
Generally, a decision will be made on your food stamps application within 30 days of the day you submitted a COMPLETE application.

Snap Benefits Processing Time
If you are approved for SNAP benefits, the Department of Human Services will notify you by mail. The notice discloses your monthly benefit amount, as well as how long your food stamps are scheduled to last. Generally, you will begin receiving food stamps within 30 days of the date Human Services received your SNAP application. If you were denied food stamps, you will receive a letter informing you of the denial and why you were deemed ineligible. Can I Enroll In An Education Or Training Through Dta’s Snap Path To Work Program
YES. DTA is working with many employment and training providers to offer job search, on-the-job training and training programs for SNAP recipients who want to participate in a program and continue their SNAP benefits. These services are offered through DTA’s SNAP Path to Work programsunder the SNAP Employment and Training rules, or SNAP ET.
Any SNAP recipient age 16 or older can volunteer for a SNAP ET program. 106 CMR §362.310. If you are approved, you do not need to pay for the training program. You can enroll and participate for free.
The SNAP Path to Work providers should be able to:
- Help you update your resume
- Help you develop interview skills or look for work.
- Enroll you in education programs that include English as a second language, Adult Basic Education or GED.
- Enroll you in a community college or other certificate program to help you get a specific skill.
- Help you build other job skills.

If I Am A Disabled Immigrant Do I Need To Wait Five Years For Snap
You do not need to wait five years if you are a lawful permanent resident adult and you receive a disability-based benefit because of a severe disability. 106 C.M.R. § 362.220 . This policy also applies to battered immigrants and humanitarian parolees.
Question 39 explains the disability rules for SNAP. If you receive TAFDC, MassHealth or EAEDC based on a disability, you may be eligible without the five-year wait. If you are under age 18, there is no 5-year wait.
If you are age 65 or older and you receive EAEDC cash assistance, DTA will let you prove disability with a signed one-page statement from your doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or psychologist. The disability needs to meet the SSI severity levels that apply to seniors .
If you are an elder or disabled LPR but are not receiving EAEDC cash assistance, contact an advocate. Some elder or disabled LPRs may not qualify for EAEDC for financial reasons

The Food Stamp Program And Income
Next, we turn to the contribution of FSP benefits to household income. For this purpose we continue separate analysis by age and further differentiate between recipients living alone or with spouses only and SSI recipients living with others. Table 3 provides a sense of the reliability of estimates for various subgroups by reporting sample sizes and the estimated number of SSI recipients for various subgroups in 2004. Some of the subgroups are so small that the results are meaningless. However for subgroup samples that are large, results can be viewed with considerable confidence.

When You Live With Family
Minors aged 18 years or younger who live with their parents, foster parents or other family members or caretakers are not eligible to apply for food stamps on their own. Rather, the household must apply on the basis that the combined household income that’s the total wages of everyone working falls below the SNAP income limit. The limit test varies depending on the number of people in the household. If there were four of you, for example, the combined income must be less than $2,665 gross and $2,050 net in 2018.
